As the year draws to a close, it is often the time to review where you are today and what you need to do to get you to your desired future.
As Marshall Goldsmith has said in his fabulous book, “what got you here won’t get you there.’ It’s true
There’s an exercise I would like to share with you that, if done periodically, could move you towards that desired future as our habits powerfully drive us.
On a blank piece of paper, answer the following questions:
1) Sustain – what are you doing well – ie following up with clients, writing daily, going to the gym
2) Improve – Something you are doing well but need to improve – asking for referrals, presentations or tackling things head-on and not leaving them.
3) Jettison – what do you need to let go of – this might be specific tasks that are more administrative or attending some meetings – low-paying clients
4) Acquire – what do you need here – maybe – new partnerships or types of clients
This exercise should take 15 minutes over coffee or tea but gets you to focus on the areas that need immediate attention on paper. It is really effective if done during a team meeting.
