As much as we are different, we are the same.
One of my most fulfilling vocations is lecturing and mentoring MBA and Master’s students at York St John University – London Campus.
I recently completed the final in-person session with my current cohort. As always, the experience left me reflecting deeply. Each cohort brings fresh insights, and even though I am the lecturer, I often feel I learn as much as they do —particularly about the richness of their diverse cultures and unique journeys.
Many of my students travel from countries such as India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, and Ghana, often bringing their families along. They pursue education while balancing work, studies, and life in a new country—an act of immense courage and determination.
Professionals in their own right —pharmacists, lawyers, dentists, doctors, physiotherapists, nurses, and entrepreneurs—are united by a shared drive to grow, push boundaries, and redefine their futures.
Their challenges—navigating accommodation, managing part-time work, and adjusting to cultural differences—demand boldness and grit.

Lessons from My Students
One moment from our recent group photo resonates deeply. As we gathered for the picture, I was about to kneel in front of the group when a student gently insisted, I sit on a chair, saying, “It’s respect.”
Moments like these are humbling. They reflect a culture that profoundly regards educators. They often call me “Professor,” a title I don’t officially hold but one they use out of reverence, making me feel deeply valued and appreciated.
Reflecting on this cohort, I realise my students have taught me much about leadership and that it’s not just about having a clear vision or strategy—it is about values, empathy, and a willingness to learn from others.
Leadership is about recognising the richness that every culture, interaction, and individual brings. It is not confined to a specific culture, profession, or life journey. Instead, regardless of background or circumstances, it is a quality found in anyone. Whether managing a team or leading an organisation, these lessons are universally applicable.
True leadership requires the ability to guide change, remain open to new perspectives, and carry forward the insights gained from those around us.

The Power of Diversity in Leadership
Matthew Syed’s Rebel Ideas eloquently captures what I’ve observed firsthand. In his book, he explores the transformative power of cognitive diversity, arguing that it is essential for solving complex problems and fostering innovation.
Diverse teams bring varied perspectives, ideas, and approaches, making them uniquely positioned to succeed in today’s fast-changing world.
My experience with my students has shown me just how true this is. Diversity doesn’t just expand our perspectives; it strengthens our empathy and deepens our understanding of one another. It enables us to lead with greater insight and compassion.
I am particularly inspired by the growing number of women and individuals from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds who are starting businesses.
As the world evolves, founders and business owners must prioritise building diverse teams.
This is not only a moral imperative but also one of the surest ways to foster innovation, inclusivity, and competitive advantage.

A Hope for the Future
Their journeys inspire me—not just as their lecturer but as a professional committed to helping others grow.
Their resilience, determination, and boldness will undoubtedly carry them far. The interpersonal and leadership skills they have learned will serve them well as they navigate their paths and become great leaders.
I am proud to have played even a small role in their journeys and look forward to seeing the impact they will make in the world.
Long may their learning—and ours—continue.
