As much as we are different, we are the same.
One of my most fulfilling roles is lecturing and mentoring MBA and Master’s students at York St John University – London Campus. Recently, I concluded the final in-person session with my current cohort, and as always, the experience left me deeply reflective.
Each cohort brings fresh insights, teaching me as much as I teach them. Through their unique journeys and diverse cultures, my students remind me of the universal drive to grow, push boundaries, and redefine futures.
The Courage Behind Every Journey
Many of my students travel from countries like India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, and Ghana, often accompanied by their families. Pursuing education in a new country while balancing work, studies, and life requires immense courage and determination.
These professionals—pharmacists, lawyers, dentists, doctors, physiotherapists, nurses, and entrepreneurs—face numerous challenges, from finding accommodation to managing part-time jobs and adjusting to cultural differences. Yet, they remain united by a shared drive to learn and grow.
Leadership Lessons from My Students
One powerful moment during a recent group photo resonates deeply. As I was about to kneel for the picture, a student gently insisted I sit on a chair, saying, “It’s respect.”
This simple act reminded me of the profound reverence many cultures hold for educators. Students often call me “Professor,” a title I don’t officially hold, but one they use with respect, making me feel valued and appreciated.
Reflecting on this cohort, I’ve come to realise that leadership is not solely about strategy or vision. It’s about values, empathy, and learning from others.
True leadership requires us to:
- Recognise and value the richness every culture and interaction brings.
- Stay open to diverse perspectives and new ideas.
- Lead with empathy, understanding, and a commitment to growth.
The Power of Diversity in Leadership
In his book Rebel Ideas, Matthew Syed eloquently explores the transformative power of cognitive diversity. Diverse teams, he argues, are better equipped to solve complex problems and drive innovation.
My experience with my students proves this to be true. Diversity not only broadens our perspectives but also deepens our empathy and strengthens our ability to connect with others.
I am particularly inspired by the increasing number of women and individuals from underrepresented backgrounds who are starting businesses. Their courage and ambition are reshaping industries and challenging norms.
For founders and business owners, building diverse teams is not just a moral imperative—it’s a strategic one. Inclusive teams are more innovative, adaptable, and prepared to thrive in today’s fast-paced world.
A Hope for the Future
The journeys of my students inspire me—not only as an educator but as a professional committed to helping others grow. Their resilience, boldness, and determination will undoubtedly carry them far, shaping them into exceptional leaders.
I am proud to have played a small part in their journeys and look forward to seeing the impact they will make in the world.
As the world evolves, let us continue to learn from one another, embrace diversity, and lead with empathy.
Long may our learning—and theirs—continue.
